About the Centre
The Don Bosco Palabek Rehabilitation Centre stands as a beacon of hope and transformation within the Palabek Refugee Settlement, located in Lamwo District, Northern Uganda. The centre was founded by the Salesians of Don Bosco, a Catholic religious congregation known worldwide for its dedication to youth education, vocational training, and social development. The establishment of the rehabilitation centre came as a response to the growing humanitarian needs caused by the influx of refugees from South Sudan, many of whom fled their homes due to war and violence. These refugees, together with vulnerable youth from the host community, often arrive with deep emotional scars, limited education, and few opportunities to rebuild their lives.
To address these challenges, Don Bosco Palabek created a safe and supportive environment where individuals can find stability, acceptance, and encouragement. The centre’s primary focus is holistic rehabilitation—not only providing material or educational support but also caring for the mind, heart, and spirit. The young people and adults are guided to rebuild their confidence and self-worth, learning to trust again after the trauma of displacement. Through psychosocial support, education, and vocational skills training, they are equipped to overcome hardship and start new journeys of independence and dignity.
The centre’s programs are designed to help beneficiaries acquire practical life and professional skills such as tailoring, carpentry, agriculture, and electrical installation skills that open doors to employment and self-reliance. Beyond technical skills, participants also receive counseling, moral formation, and leadership guidance, preparing them to contribute positively to their families and communities. Above all, the Don Bosco Palabek Rehabilitation Centre reflects the Salesian mission of “educating by evangelizing and evangelizing by educating.” It is a home where people learn, grow, and rediscover the joy of living with purpose. Through compassion, structure, and community spirit, the centre transforms despair into hope and dependency into empowerment, laying the foundation for a brighter, more peaceful future.
