DON BOSCO PALABEK LAUNCHES MAJOR INFRASTRUCTURE EXPANSION PROJECT TO EMPOWER YOUTH
Don Bosco Vocational Training Centre (VTC) Palabek officially launched a major infrastructure expansion project aimed at improving vocational training and student welfare. The project includes the construction of a new Administration Block, Welding and Brick Laying and Concrete Practice (BCP) Workshops, a Girls’ Dormitory with a Dining Hall, a Multipurpose Hall, and other support facilities.
Speaking during the groundbreaking ceremony, the Principal, Brother Hubert Twagirayezu, described the project as a dream that has gradually become a reality. He explained that the new Administration Block will bring all administrative offices together, improving coordination and service delivery while creating more space for classrooms and workshops. He also highlighted the growing need for improved training facilities, particularly for Welding and BCP programs, as well as better accommodation for female students. The new Girls’ Dormitory, which will accommodate approximately 350 students, will provide a safe and comfortable environment equipped with all essential facilities.
Representing the Planning and Development Office (PDO), Mr. Dusabimana Felicien emphasized that the project is about more than constructing buildings. “Today, we are not simply inaugurating a construction project; we are laying the foundation for a brighter future for East African students. This initiative reflects our commitment to empowering youth, especially girls, through education, skills development, and dignity.”
The local community welcomed the development, with LC I Chairperson Opio Obedi commending Don Bosco for its continued contribution to education and youth empowerment in Palabek and Lamwo District.
Providing an overview of the project, Mr. Geoffrey Odongcen, Project Manager at BuildMax, assured stakeholders that all construction works would comply with approved engineering standards and local authority requirements. He also noted that the project would involve members of the local community where possible.
The project is being funded by Don Bosco Swiss, with support from the Planning and Development Office in Kigali and other Salesian partners. Appreciation was also extended to the Government of Uganda, Lamwo District Local Government, and the Office of the Prime Minister for their continued support.
As the foundation stones were laid, participants celebrated a shared vision of creating better opportunities for young people through quality vocational education and skills training. The project marks an important step in the continued growth of Don Bosco VTC Palabek and its mission of empowering youth to build productive and self-reliant futures.
